X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is set to make its new recommendation algorithm publicly available within the next seven days, according to its owner Elon Musk.

In a post on X, Musk said the move will cover the entire system responsible for determining which posts users see on their timelines, including advertisements.

“We will make the new X algorithm, including all code used to determine what organic and advertising posts are recommended to users, open source in 7 days,“ Musk said in a social media post.

“This will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed, “ He added.

The announcement marks a renewed push for transparency around how content is ranked and distributed on the platform, a long-standing issue among users, developers, and regulators.

By open-sourcing the algorithm, X will allow independent developers and researchers to examine how recommendations are generated and how changes affect visibility and reach.

Musk also said the release will not be a one-time effort. Instead, X plans to publish updated versions of the algorithm every four weeks, alongside detailed developer notes explaining what has changed.

This could give the public clearer insight into how the platform evolves its content-ranking system over time.

The move comes as major social media platforms face increasing scrutiny worldwide over algorithmic decision-making, content moderation, and transparency. Making the recommendation system open source could position X as one of the more transparent platforms in terms of how user feeds are shaped.

As of now, X has not released additional technical details on where the code will be published or how developers can access it, but Musk’s statement indicates the first release is expected within a week.
