Scam Watch Pilipinas flags viral ‘Dance of the Hillary’ cyber warning as fake

A viral message circulating again on social media and messaging apps is warning users not to open a video titled “Dance of the Hillary,” claiming it is a dangerous cyberattack supposedly announced on BBC radio. Cybersecurity advocates and fact-checkers say the warning is false and part of a long-running internet hoax that periodically resurfaces online.

The message urges recipients to inform all contacts not to open the video and to forward the warning widely. It also claims the supposed attack originated in Pakistan and was reported by the BBC.

Cybersecurity advocate Jocel de Guzman, co-founder of Scam Watch Pilipinas, said there is no credible evidence that such malware exists.

“There has never been a verified cyber threat called ‘Dance of the Hillary,’ and there has been no such warning issued by the BBC or by any legitimate cybersecurity authority,” De Guzman said.

The warning first appeared online around 2015 and has repeatedly resurfaced in different forms on email, SMS, and messaging platforms.

Scam Watch Pilipinas said that the message’s wording reveals it as a classic chain hoax. Messages that urge recipients to “forward this to as many people as you can” are a common pattern used in misinformation campaigns and viral internet rumors.

Legitimate alerts about malware or cyber threats typically come from official advisories issued by government agencies or security organizations, not anonymous chain messages.

Scam Watch Pilipinas is urging the public to avoid forwarding such warnings without verification. Instead, users are advised to check trusted sources such as cybersecurity agencies, reputable news organizations, or established fact-checking groups before sharing alarming messages online.

The real danger of messages like the “Dance of the Hillary” warning is not malware but the rapid spread of misinformation that can create unnecessary panic and clutter online communication channels.

Readers who encounter the message are encouraged to delete it and refrain from forwarding it further.
