DECODED: TECH PERSPECTIVE
By Alvin Veroy
Out of frustration from the endless corruption issues flooding my social media feed, I stumbled upon BetterGov.ph, an open source group dedicated to building practical digital solutions for Filipinos.
What started as a search for answers quickly became an unexpected discovery of an inspiring and inclusive tech community that is changing the way people interact with government and with each other.
The search for hopeful change
Scrolling through news stories and social posts about graft, inefficiency, and broken government services left me angry and disillusioned. I wanted to do something, anything, to help fix these problems, but as an ordinary citizen, it all seemed out of reach. That changed when I found BetterGov.ph.
Their mission to make government services more accessible spoke directly to the concerns I had been carrying.
From my very first visit, I could see that this was more than just another website. BetterGov.ph offers a clear and human friendly way to navigate online government services. It is a simple and intuitive directory that helps anyone find what they need, whether it is social security forms or business permit applications. This refreshing approach stood out in sharp contrast to the confusing official portals I had struggled with in the past.
Joining a welcoming ‘Bayanihan Community’
Even more impressive than the technology was the people behind it. The community brings to life the Filipino spirit of bayanihan. Experienced developers, designers, students, and career shifters all work together.
There is no ego or sense of exclusion. Instead, I found a real sense of family where veterans refer to themselves as “Ate” and “Kuya,” readily offering advice or joining calls to help anyone who needs it.
The culture is not about who knows the most. Whether someone is a seasoned developer or a newcomer, they are welcomed and encouraged to contribute.
Open conversations, collaborative coding sessions, and peer reviews make learning enjoyable and accessible. Mistakes are treated as part of the learning process. They are met with encouragement and constructive feedback.
Real impact through real people
The initiatives we worked on ranged from improving the government service directories to brainstorming transparency tools powered by open data and blockchain. Every small improvement made a meaningful difference.
Relatives and neighbors would share gratitude for finally being able to access the right government forms, while students and beginners discovered new skills and confidence. Each person realized that their voice truly mattered.
Openness is at the core of everything. Community feedback is celebrated and actively shapes the direction of projects. Anyone can propose new ideas or tools and see them developed through broad collaboration. The community values everyone’s background and experience.
Volunteerism and open source in action
BetterGov.ph thrives on transparency and teamwork. Everything is done in the open—from code contributions and discussions to project planning and resource sharing. Anyone with curiosity or passion can take part. The community shares resources and divides responsibilities so that every volunteer’s contribution is recognized.
Through this experience I saw how open source principles combined with generosity can fuel not just technology but also personal and social growth.
The culture of ‘Ate, Kuya, and Digital Bayanihan’
The warm and welcoming atmosphere makes BetterGov.ph truly unique. From playful conversations to supportive words like “salamat Ate” and “thanks Kuya,” the sense of kinship stands out. This spirit of bayanihan moves digital barriers instead of physical houses and encourages everyone to help lift each other up.
Difficult challenges do not discourage the group but inspire collaboration and problem solving. Feedback is always delivered with kindness and swiftly translated into practical action.
Why BetterGov.ph makes a difference
For anyone fed up with news of corruption and inefficiency, BetterGov.ph proves that a genuine community backed by open source collaboration can make a difference. This is more than simply making government resources user friendly.
It is about building confidence, encouraging learning, and restoring hope for a better Philippines. Every contribution is valued, every member is welcomed, and the bayanihan spirit is alive and tangible in the digital world.
