United States President Donald Trump vowed to impose steep additional tariffs on countries that impose digital taxes, legislation, rules, or regulations targeting American technology firms.

“Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology. They also, outrageously, give a complete pass to China’s largest Tech Companies,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“This must end, and end NOW! With this TRUTH, I put all Countries with Digital Taxes, Legislation, Rules, or Regulations, on notice that unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as President of the United States, will impose substantial additional Tariffs on that Country’s Exports to the U.S.A., and institute Export restrictions on our Highly Protected Technology and Chips,” he added.

There are reports that this remark was largely interpreted as a reference to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, a regulation designed to ensure fairness and contestability in digital markets.

Furthermore, Trump affirmed, “As the President of the United States, I will stand up to Countries that attack our incredible American Tech Companies.”

The US President said American technology companies are neither the “piggy bank” nor the “doormat” of the world any longer.

“Show respect to America and our amazing Tech Companies or, consider the consequences! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” he added.

In the Philippines, three committees of the House of Representatives that investigated online disinformation and fake news have recommended legislation requiring foreign-based social media platforms—such as Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube—to establish offices in the country as a regulatory measure.

In one of the hearings, a lawmaker proposed the creation of a Digital Council of the Philippines to develop its own code of ethics and help combat the spread of fake news.

During the same hearing, former Bataan 1st District Representative Geraldine Roman explained that the proposed council would include registered content creators, digital advertisers, and public relations firms, along with representatives from social media platforms such as Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), as well as artificial intelligence (AI) groups.
