CICC probes reported GCash data breach, says data likely did not come from platform

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has launched an investigation into reports of an alleged data breach involving G-Xchange, Inc., the operator of popular mobile wallet GCash.

In a statement, the CICC said its Cybercrime Investigation Office (CIO), in coordination with GCash, conducted an initial assessment and found that the data circulating online appeared to be recycled information — older or previously available data that were reshared to appear as newly compromised material.

“Further examination shows that the datasets in question do not originate from GCash’s systems,” the agency said, adding that the findings suggest there has been no recent compromise of the platform’s infrastructure.

GCash has also expressed openness to system checks by the CICC and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to ensure that no potential points of compromise exist.

The CICC said it is pursuing leads on the possible individual or group behind the reported exposure and is verifying the origin of the uploaded data to determine any connection to previous cyber incidents.

The agency assured the public that all findings will be shared with the proper authorities as part of due process and in accordance with established cybercrime investigation protocols.

Earlier, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) urged the public to exercise heightened vigilance following reports of an alleged data leak involving G-Xchange, Inc., the operator of the popular mobile wallet platform GCash, which surfaced online on October 26.

Meanwhile, in line with the CICC, GCash said that its initial findings showed the alleged dataset does not match the data structure used within GCash’s system.

“These findings strongly indicate that the material being circulated did not originate from GCash. At this time, there is no evidence of any breach in GCash systems. All customer accounts and funds remain secure.,” Gcash said.
