Instagram explores chat-based ‘Your Algorithm’ controls
Instagram is testing ideas that could make its recommendation system more visible and easier for users to control.
In a post shared by the verified account of Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the platform showed a concept called “Your algorithm,” which appears to let users review how Instagram understands their interests and directly adjust what they want to see more or less of.
The mockup shows an “About you” section describing a user’s interests and lifestyle. It also includes topic buttons under “What you want to see more of,” such as sports, thrifting, painting, pop music, chess, studying hacks, and day-in-the-life content.
Another section, “What you want to see less of,” shows an example where a user can reduce cat videos from recommendations.
The concept also features a chat-style input box labeled “Ask for anything…,” suggesting that Instagram may be exploring a more conversational way for users to manage their feeds and recommendations.
In the post, Instagram said it wants to make “Your Algorithm” more central to the user experience.
“We want to evolve Your Algorithm from a setting into something that feels central to your experience on Instagram,” the post read.
Mosseri also said the goal is to make Instagram’s algorithm feel more interactive for users over time.
“Over time, we want your algorithm to feel like something you talk to rather than something that happens to you,” he said.
The feature appears to still be in the concept stage, as Mosseri described the screenshots as “a few ideas” the company is exploring.
If rolled out, the feature could give users more direct control over Instagram’s recommendation engine, which powers content across areas such as Reels, Explore, and the main feed. It may also help address long-running concerns over opaque social media algorithms by making user preferences easier to view and adjust.
