Bye, Google Assistant; Hello, Gemini

Google Assistant is set to say goodbye to Android users this September 4 as Google completes its transition to Gemini, making the AI-powered assistant the new default experience on supported mobile devices.

“We’re writing to let you know that the Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued, and Gemini—our next-generation AI-powered assistant—is now the assistant experience on Android,” Google said.

In a notice sent to users, Google said it will begin removing access to Google Assistant starting Sept. 4, 2026. The rollout will happen gradually and may take several weeks before it reaches all eligible devices.

Once the transition is complete, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on their Android phones, tablets, or compatible paired devices.

Instead, Gemini will become Google’s default assistant on supported Android devices. Saying “Hey Google” or long-pressing the power button will launch Gemini instead of Google Assistant.

The change will also apply to Wear OS smartwatches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and vehicles using Android Auto through a connected smartphone.

Google said vehicles equipped with Google built-in will continue supporting Google Assistant beyond Sept. 4.

The company clarified that the transition only affects the assistant experience on mobile devices and accessories paired with them. Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, and smart displays will move to Gemini under separate rollout plans.

Google first announced its plans to phase out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini as part of its broader artificial intelligence strategy. Since then, the company has steadily expanded Gemini’s capabilities across Android and other Google services.

The September rollout marks the end of Google Assistant’s nearly decade-long run after its debut in 2016, ushering in Gemini as Google’s primary AI assistant for millions of Android users worldwide.
