SmartShopping, a chatbot-powered prototype, is showing how Google’s Gemini API can be used to make online shopping more conversational and easier for users.

The app is designed to help shoppers find, try, and buy products online by integrating with e-commerce platforms. Instead of manually browsing through categories or typing exact keywords, users can interact with a chatbot using natural language.

For example, a user may type, “I am looking for a white t-shirt.” The Gemini API then processes the input and converts it into a structured query that can be sent to an integrated brand service. The system then retrieves product information and options that match the user’s request.

The developers said Gemini plays a key role in transforming user prompts into actionable queries tailored to specific brands and services. This allows SmartShopping to provide more personalized and brand-specific results, instead of generic product suggestions.

Aside from product search, the chatbot can also provide general information about a brand, giving shoppers additional context before making a purchase decision.

SmartShopping is currently a prototype and uses public services, including the H&M API available through RapidAPI.

The project highlights how generative AI can support the future of e-commerce, where shopping platforms may become more interactive, personalized, and responsive to everyday customer prompts.
