A new 24/7 helpline has been launched to provide confidential support for Filipinos dealing with gambling-related problems, as easier access to online and digital gaming platforms raises concerns over player protection and responsible gaming.
The National Problem Gambling Helpline, which may be reached at 02-8248-9568, connects callers to trained counselors who can provide support, guidance, counseling, and referrals for further assistance.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation launched the helpline on May 26 at its corporate office in Pasay City, in partnership with Seagulls Flock Organization Inc., a group involved in mental health, counseling, addiction treatment, and behavioral wellness.
PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco said the initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to keep the gaming sector “productive, well-governed, humane, and accountable.”
While gaming may be treated by many as a form of leisure, Tengco said it can also lead to serious consequences for others, including financial strain, emotional distress, damaged relationships, and isolation.
The helpline is designed to provide immediate assistance, psychological support, and referrals to people who may be experiencing gambling-related harm. It will also provide guidance for family members who may be affected by a loved one’s gambling behavior.
According to PAGCOR, 12 para-counselors will initially handle the service in three shifts per day. The counselors completed training before the launch, including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, clinical skills, and call-handling procedures.
Seagulls Flock Organization Chairperson Teresita “Chit” Castillo said the service will help connect regulation with clinical and evidence-based interventions, including counseling and referrals to treatment and rehabilitation centers.
The launch comes at a time when digital access has made gambling more available to users through online platforms. For regulators, the challenge is no longer limited to licensing and enforcement, but also includes putting support systems in place for people who may be harmed by excessive or uncontrolled betting.
For individuals or families facing gambling-related concerns, the 24/7 National Problem Gambling Helpline may be reached at 02-8248-9568.
