Globe moves closer to universal connectivity with successful satellite-powered mobile trials

Globe has successfully completed pilot tests of its satellite-powered mobile connectivity, marking another milestone in its push to deliver reliable communication even in the most remote parts of the Philippines.

As part of its ongoing exploration of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), Globe continues to expand trials of Direct-to-Cellular (D2C) or Satellite-to-Phone (Sat2Phone) technology in partnership with global Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite providers.

The breakthrough enables ordinary mobile phones to connect directly to satellites—without the need for extra equipment—promising coverage in areas beyond the reach of traditional cell towers.

The latest live trial with Lynk Global successfully demonstrated voice call functionality using its satellite network, reinforcing the feasibility of integrating satellite communication into Globe’s network in the near term. This follows earlier achievements such as the Philippines’ first satellite SMS and voice service trials, along with demonstrations of Sat2Phone capabilities using 3GPP Pre-Release 17 NTN technology.

“At Globe, innovation is at the heart of what we do,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovation. “By exploring satellite-to-phone connectivity, we’re making sure that no Filipino is left behind, especially those in geographically challenged areas where traditional networks are difficult to build. This technology brings us closer to truly universal connectivity.”

Beyond everyday communication, Globe envisions NTN technology as a vital lifeline for disaster response and emergency communication, ensuring that affected communities can stay connected when it matters most.
Guided by its Alagang Globe advocacy, the company continues to invest in innovations that foster inclusivity, resilience, and digital empowerment—building a future where every Filipino, wherever they may be, stays connected.
