Globe has taken a major leap in next-generation connectivity after successfully demonstrating how 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology can deliver fiber-like speeds without physical cables, powered by Nokia’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solution paired with Wi-Fi 7.
In field tests conducted in Zamboanga City, the telco achieved peak speeds of 4.3 Gbps at a distance of 2.1 kilometers, and nearly 1 Gbps even from almost 9 kilometers away—showing that the technology can perform reliably even across difficult terrains.
The breakthrough paves the way for a future where broadband can be deployed faster, reach farther, and serve both urban and remote communities more efficiently.
The Philippine Marines became the first to use this technology, integrating Globe’s mmWave-powered connectivity in their day-to-day operations.
At the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 headquarters in Naval Station Rio Hondo, the ultra-fast link is already helping strengthen communications for national security missions.
“We are grateful to Globe, our long-time partner, for continuously supporting the Marine Battalion Landing Team-1 with reliable communications solutions. Through Globe’s commitment to innovation, we have strengthened our connectivity even in the most challenging environments,” said Lt. Col. Nepthalie C. Papa, Commanding Officer of Marine Battalion Landing Team-1.
Gerhard Tan, Globe’s Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations, said the test marks a major step in proving what mmWave can unlock for the country.
“At Globe, we’re always looking ahead, pushing the limits of what’s possible in connectivity. The success of our 5G mmWave and Wi-Fi 7 deployment with the Philippine Marines proves that advanced connectivity can transform mission-critical operations. Beyond defense, this technology lays the groundwork for a truly digital and connected Philippines,” Tan said.
Globe and Nokia are now pioneering the commercial rollout of 5G mmWave in the Philippines, with live sites already operating in Zamboanga City, Quezon City, and Rizal province. A wider expansion is planned as more compatible devices reach the market.
Beyond its initial use in defense, 5G mmWave is expected to open new opportunities for enterprises, government units, and communities—from ultra-high-speed broadband in underserved areas to private 5G networks that can support industrial automation, secure operations, and nationwide digital transformation.
