AMD, OpenAI forge strategic partnership to deploy 6 gigawatts of AI GPUs

Semiconductor giant AMD and artificial intelligence (AI) leader OpenAI have announced a landmark strategic partnership to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs that will power OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure.

The multi-year collaboration begins with the deployment of 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026, scaling over multiple generations of AMD’s high-performance chips to support OpenAI’s expanding compute requirements.

Under the definitive agreement, OpenAI will designate AMD as a core strategic compute partner, leveraging AMD’s rack-scale AI solutions and future GPU generations. The partnership builds on a long-standing relationship that began with the Instinct MI300X and MI350X series, and will see both companies jointly optimize hardware and software roadmaps for large-scale AI deployments.

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said the collaboration marks a major milestone in AI infrastructure.

“AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster,” Altman said.

Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, added that “building the future of AI requires deep collaboration across every layer of the stack,” emphasizing that AMD’s technology will help scale AI tools for global use.

As part of the agreement, AMD has issued warrants to OpenAI for up to 160 million AMD shares, which will vest in tranches tied to deployment milestones — including the initial 1 GW rollout and subsequent expansions — as well as share-price and technical targets.

AMD Chief Financial Officer Jean Hu said the partnership is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue and will be “highly accretive” to AMD’s non-GAAP earnings per share.

The move reinforces AMD’s growing influence in the rapidly evolving AI hardware market, as competitors race to provide the compute power needed for large language models and generative AI systems.

Through this collaboration, AMD and OpenAI aim to build the infrastructure that meets the world’s surging demand for AI — combining innovation and execution to advance the future of high-performance and adaptive computing.
