Technology giant Apple has secured what it described as its biggest education deal ever for Mac, with the Philippines' Department of Education (DepEd) set to deploy 170,000 MacBook Neo laptops to teachers and staff.
The agreement marks a major milestone for Apple's education business, placing the Philippines at the center of the company's largest Mac education deal to date.
Apple's biggest Mac education deal
During Apple's November 2 earnings call, the company highlighted its agreement with DepEd as an example of its expanding presence in the education sector.
“As one example, we recently secured our biggest education deal ever for Mac with the Department of Education in the Philippines. They're going to deploy 170,000 MacBook Neos to teachers and staff,” Apple said.
The company also highlighted the business opportunities created by agreements involving educational institutions.
“Opportunities like this bring more users into our ecosystem and help fuel growth across our business,” it added.
What the deal means for Filipino educators
For Filipino teachers and education personnel, the planned deployment could provide additional access to technology for everyday school responsibilities, including preparing lessons, creating instructional materials, and handling administrative tasks.
The agreement also puts the spotlight on the role of digital devices in supporting educators as schools increasingly incorporate technology into teaching and learning.
However, while Apple confirmed the planned deployment of 170,000 laptops, the announcement did not specify when distribution would begin, which schools would receive the devices, or how recipients would be selected.
The total value of the agreement was also not disclosed in the quoted statement.
