Think Microsoft Excel is just for spreadsheets, budgets, and office reports? The popular software is now at the center of an international esports competition, where players race against the clock to solve complex challenges and compete for cash prizes.
The Microsoft Excel World Championship (MEWC) is turning spreadsheet skills into competitive gaming, bringing together participants from around the world to demonstrate their speed, accuracy, logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
Unlike traditional esports tournaments featuring popular video games, Excel Esports challenges competitors to solve puzzles, analyze data, and complete assignments using Microsoft Excel.
Players receive timed challenges that require them to apply formulas, organize information, and develop solutions under pressure. Their performance determines whether they advance to the next round.
The competition focuses on logical thinking rather than traditional financial modeling, allowing participants from different professional and educational backgrounds to compete.
The 2026 Microsoft Excel World Championship is scheduled to hold its finals from November 30 to December 2 at the HyperX Arena in the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a total prize fund of $100,000.
A total of 256 competitors can qualify for the group stage through online tournaments, qualification rounds, and organizer selections.
The tournament follows a double-elimination format, with successful players advancing toward the live championship rounds.
During the semifinals, participants face elimination rounds in which the lowest-ranked player is removed every five minutes. The final competition follows a similar format until a world champion is crowned.
