Fewest corners, more overtaking: Austrian GP sets up fast Sunday test for F1 teams

Formula 1 returns to the Red Bull Ring this weekend for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, with the main race set to take place on Sunday, June 28, as the European leg of the season continues after the recent Monaco and Barcelona double header.

The Austrian stop also kicks off another back-to-back sequence in the 2026 calendar, placing teams under pressure to quickly adjust to one of the shortest, fastest, and most deceptively technical circuits of the season.

According to F1’s “Need to Know” preview released on June 25, 2026 at 10 a.m. UTC, the Red Bull Ring remains one of the most action-friendly tracks on the calendar despite having only 10 corners, the fewest of any circuit in F1. Fewer turns mean drivers spend more time attacking braking zones and traction points, creating more chances for overtaking, especially into Turns 3 and 4.

The Austrian Grand Prix was first held in 1964 at Zeltweg. The current Red Bull Ring layout measures 4.326 kilometers, with Oscar Piastri holding the lap record at 1m 07.924s for McLaren in 2025. Max Verstappen remains the most successful driver in Austria in terms of both pole positions and wins, with four each.

The run from pole position to the Turn 1 braking point is 243 meters, making the opening phase crucial for track position. The 2025 race produced 81 overtakes, while the Safety Car probability from the previous 10 Austrian races stands at 50 percent. The Virtual Safety Car probability is at 40 percent. A pit stop at the Red Bull Ring costs around 20.02 seconds, including a 2.5-second stop.

Former Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer described Austria as “a picturesque circuit, really undulating, which makes it nice to drive and characterful.” He warned that drivers must be careful with the kerbs because it is easy to straddle them or run over abrasive sections that can damage the car.

Palmer also noted that Turn 1 is faster than many drivers expect, while braking dominates the first sector. Turn 4, a downhill braking zone, is the easiest to misjudge, with many drivers ending up in the gravel on corner exit. The strongest overtaking areas are Turns 3 and 4, while the second half of the lap flows quickly, giving drivers little time to breathe across the Grand Prix distance.

Recent Austrian qualifying history also shows how strong Verstappen has been at the venue. The last five polesitters were Lando Norris for McLaren in 2025, Verstappen for Red Bull in 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021.

Race winners have been more varied. Norris won the Austrian Grand Prix in 2025 for McLaren after converting pole into victory. George Russell won for Mercedes in 2024, Verstappen won for Red Bull in 2023, Charles Leclerc won for Ferrari in 2022, and Verstappen also claimed victory in 2021.

Tyre strategy will be another key factor. Pirelli is bringing the softest compounds in its range for Spielberg, namely the C3, C4, and C5. Wear is not expected to be the deciding issue, but thermal degradation could become a concern because the Red Bull Ring’s older asphalt has high levels of micro- and macro-roughness that generate heat in the tyres.

Grip is expected to improve throughout the weekend due to rubber laid down by the many motorsport events hosted at the circuit. However, the traction zones are expected to stress the rear tyres, while the downhill braking areas will require drivers to manage the front axle carefully.

The Red Bull Ring also features an elevation change of 63 meters, making it the second circuit for altitude variation. Pirelli noted that the new power units could deliver enough power to trigger locking during downhill braking phases.

Altitude will also matter. At more than 600 meters above sea level, the thinner air reduces downforce, which can increase tyre slip. Last year, most teams completed the race with two pit stops, and all three nominated compounds were used. With the greater consistency of the current tyres, however, a stronger move toward a one-stop strategy is possible this year.

Weather could complicate the race further. Late June temperatures may approach Barcelona levels, but the circuit’s location in the mountainous area of Styria and the surrounding forests can also create sudden changes in weather conditions.

The current form guide adds more intrigue. The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix marked the first race of the 2026 season won by a non-Mercedes driver, as Lewis Hamilton secured his maiden Grand Prix victory for Ferrari. That win strengthened Hamilton’s hold on second place in the Drivers’ Championship and cut his gap to leader Kimi Antonelli from 66 points to 41.

Antonelli’s retirement in Barcelona also ended his consecutive winning streak, giving Mercedes a clear reminder of how costly non-finishes can be. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said after the race that he “absolutely” sees Hamilton as a title threat and added that the Silver Arrows “can’t afford to not finish.”

Mercedes will be looking for a stronger response in Austria, where Russell won two years ago. Ferrari, meanwhile, will aim to continue its momentum with Hamilton, while Leclerc will be hoping to recover after back-to-back non-finishes in Monaco and Barcelona.

McLaren remains third in the Teams’ Championship after a solid Barcelona result, where Norris finished on the podium. Red Bull, racing at its home event, will be under pressure after Team Principal Laurent Mekies described the team’s Barcelona performance as a “reality check” following its failure to match the pace of the three teams ahead.

The midfield fight also remains tight. Alpine still leads the group in fifth after scoring with both cars in Barcelona. Racing Bulls sit sixth after also securing double points last time out. Haas is looking to improve from seventh, while Williams is trying to recover from eighth. Audi, Aston Martin, and Cadillac remain near the bottom of the standings with two, one, and zero points, respectively.

Austria also carries memorable F1 history. One of its most iconic moments came in 1999, during the first race after Michael Schumacher was sidelined by a broken leg. With Eddie Irvine leading Ferrari’s charge, McLaren drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard appeared to have the pace advantage after qualifying.

But the race changed dramatically at Turn 3 when the two McLarens collided, with Coulthard nudging Hakkinen into a spin. Coulthard later lost out to Irvine as strategies unfolded, giving the Ferrari driver a major boost in his title fight. Hakkinen, who eventually became that year’s champion, recovered to finish third.

With only 10 corners, a short 4.326-kilometer lap, a 50 percent Safety Car probability, and 81 overtakes recorded last year, the Red Bull Ring remains proof that fewer turns can still produce more racing action. For teams and drivers, the challenge on Sunday will be simple but unforgiving: brake cleanly, protect the tyres, avoid the kerbs, and attack every small opening before the lap disappears.
