Filipino athlete Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape secured the Philippines’ fourth gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, after defeating Vietnam’s Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang in the mixed individual virtual taekwondo final.
According to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), Yape swept the championship match, 2-0, with scores of 500-0 and 620-0 at Mat 2 of the Toyohashi Gymnasium.
The victory brought the Philippines’ gold medal tally to four, matching its performance at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games while surpassing its overall medal haul through additional silver and bronze medals.
Yape dominated the opening round, recording 12 total kicks, including one head kick, and four blocks. His Vietnamese opponent managed four kicks, two head kicks, and one block.
The Filipino athlete continued his performance in the second round, registering nine total kicks, four head kicks, and one block to secure a 620-0 victory. Chau recorded three kicks, one head kick, and two blocks.
Across both rounds, Yape accumulated a combined remaining health points (HP) score of 1,120-0. He also led in total kicks, 21-7, head kicks, 5-3, and blocks, 5-3.
Unlike traditional taekwondo, virtual taekwondo uses motion-tracking technology and digital competition systems that allow athletes to compete in a simulated environment. Players perform physical movements that are translated into actions by their virtual counterparts, with results determined through the competition’s digital scoring system.
Yape’s gold medal adds to the Philippines’ achievements in the Asian Games and highlights the growing presence of technology-driven sports in international competition.
