OpenAI uncovers hidden recording device in office, FBI arrests employee
OpenAI has uncovered a sophisticated recording device secretly planted inside one of its offices, prompting a federal investigation that led to the arrest of an employee allegedly responsible for installing it.
In a statement posted on its official OpenAI Newsroom account on Wednesday, Oct. 14, the artificial intelligence company said it used its own AI models to analyze the device and trace its origin.
According to OpenAI, the investigation identified a specific employee who had allegedly planted the recording device several days before its discovery.
The company subsequently referred the matter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), whose agents and prosecutors moved quickly to make an arrest.
“We referred the matter to the FBI, and weβre grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest,” OpenAI said.
The company confirmed that the FBI’s investigation remains ongoing and that it will continue cooperating with federal authorities.
Despite the security breach, OpenAI said it has found no evidence suggesting that the employee gained unauthorized access to or extracted sensitive company information.
“At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data,” the company stated.
OpenAI also confirmed that the employee involved in the incident had been terminated.
The discovery raises concerns about insider security threats facing artificial intelligence companies, particularly those developing advanced AI models and handling sensitive technological assets.
OpenAI emphasized that protecting its technology, data, and personnel remains a priority, describing the security of advanced AI systems as a matter of national importance.
The company said its security measures are designed to address threats ranging from malicious insiders and cybercriminals to nation-state actors.
It also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in identifying and responding to sophisticated security threats, citing its use of AI models in investigating the recording device.
As of the company’s statement, further details about the employee’s identity, the location of the affected office, and the nature of the recording device had not been disclosed.
