Before Pokémon GO, there was Google Earth

Pokémon GO is now 10 years old, but its story did not really begin with Pokémon. It began with maps and with one man who had already spent years figuring out how to turn the real world into something people could explore digitally.
Long before millions of players started walking around parks, malls and streets looking for Pikachu, John Hanke co-founded Keyhole, a digital mapping company acquired by Google in 2004. Its technology eventually became the foundation of Google Earth. Hanke later led Google’s Geo division, working on products such as Google Earth, Google Maps and Street View, giving him a front-row seat to how digital technology could change the way people see and navigate the physical world.
That experience would become central to Pokémon GO. Hanke was already thinking beyond maps as simple navigation tools. He saw the possibility of using location itself as part of an experience, where streets, landmarks and public spaces could become interactive.
That idea took shape through Niantic, which began inside Google. Its early game, Ingress, asked players to physically visit real-world locations that appeared as portals inside the game. It was an unusual concept at the time, because instead of keeping players glued to one place, the game pushed them outside and made movement part of the experience.
Ingress also gave Hanke something important. It proved that people were willing to walk around cities, visit landmarks and interact with digital objects tied to actual places. The technology was already working. What it needed was a much bigger idea that could bring the experience to a wider audience.
Then came Pokémon.
The April Fools’ joke that showed the potential
In 2014, Google and The Pokémon Company launched the Google Maps Pokémon Challenge as an April Fools’ project. Users could open Google Maps and search for Pokémon scattered across different locations around the world, turning a familiar mapping app into a temporary Pokémon hunt.
The campaign was meant to be playful, but it also showed how naturally Pokémon could work with real-world geography. Instead of exploring a fictional map, players could imagine their own city, neighborhood or park becoming part of the Pokémon universe.
For Hanke, the connection was obvious. Niantic already had Ingress, while Google Maps had just shown that people enjoyed the idea of finding Pokémon through a real-world map. The two concepts were suddenly much closer than they had been before.
When Hanke later brought the idea to Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, he was not pitching something that existed only on paper. He already had a working location-based game and years of mapping technology behind him, which made the concept easier to understand and, more importantly, easier to believe.
He could show that people were already willing to move around the physical world for a digital experience. Pokémon simply gave that behavior a stronger emotional pull, because the franchise had spent years teaching fans that the fun was in finding, catching and collecting creatures.
Mapping was the real foundation
Pokémon GO is often described as an augmented reality game, but its deeper foundation is really about location and mapping. The phone determines where the player is, while the game connects that position to PokéStops, Gyms, Pokémon encounters and other activities tied to physical places.
That is where Hanke’s background becomes important. Google Earth showed that the real world could be represented as an interactive digital environment. Ingress showed that this environment could become a game, while the Google Maps Pokémon Challenge showed that Pokémon could fit naturally into that same space.
Pokémon GO brought those ideas together in a way that was simple enough for almost anyone to understand. You opened your phone, looked at the map and started walking.
When the game launched in July 2016, the result went far beyond a typical mobile gaming success. Parks filled with players, monuments became PokéStops, and malls, campuses and neighborhoods suddenly became part of a shared gaming environment. People were not just playing on their phones. They were moving through the real world because of what was happening on their phones.
That became one of Pokémon GO’s biggest achievements. It changed the idea of mobile gaming from something that kept people looking down at a screen into something that encouraged them to go somewhere.
The mapmaker behind Pokémon GO
The story behind Pokémon GO is also a good example of how technology innovation often works. Hanke did not create Pokémon, and he did not invent digital maps. What he saw was how two very different things could become much more powerful when brought together.
The Pokémon Company had characters people already loved and wanted to find. Hanke had years of experience building technology that could make the real world searchable, interactive and eventually playable.
Ten years after Pokémon GO launched, that may be the more interesting part of its story. The game did not become a global phenomenon simply because Pokémon appeared on smartphones. It worked because someone who had spent years mapping the world realized that the world itself could become the game.
