Union Bank of the Philippines has introduced Apple Pay for its cardholders, allowing customers to make contactless payments using their iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac.
UnionBank said Apple Pay became available to its customers in the Philippines on Tuesday, Aug. 4, offering a more secure and private payment option for in-store, in-app, and online purchases.
For in-store transactions, users can double-click the side button of their iPhone or Apple Watch, authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode, and hold the device near a contactless payment terminal.
Apple Pay can be used at grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, retail establishments, and other merchants that accept contactless payments.
“As we continue building a next-generation bank, we’re focused on making everyday banking and payments simpler, safer, and more intuitive,” UnionBank President and Chief Executive Officer Ana Aboitiz Delgado said.
“Bringing Apple Pay to UnionBank cardholders enhances the payment experience by allowing customers to pay quickly and securely with the devices they use every day,” she added.
Delgado said customers could use the service when shopping in stores, online, or through mobile applications.
Apple Pay also allows users to make purchases through apps and websites without repeatedly entering their card numbers, contact details, and billing or shipping information.
UnionBank said customers’ actual credit or debit card numbers are not stored on their devices or Apple’s servers.
Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and stored in the device’s Secure Element, a certified chip designed to protect payment information.
Each transaction is also authenticated using the device’s security features and a one-time dynamic security code.
To activate the service, UnionBank customers can open the Wallet app on their iPhone, tap the plus button, and follow the instructions to add an eligible UnionBank card.
Once added, the card can be used with Apple Pay on compatible Apple devices. UnionBank said cardholders would continue receiving the rewards and benefits attached to their cards.
