More Americans would rather live near nuclear plants than AI data centers, Gallup survey finds

A new survey from Gallup found that many Americans are now more opposed to having artificial intelligence (AI) data centers built near their communities than nuclear power plants.

According to the survey conducted from March 2 to 18, around 71 percent of Americans said they oppose the construction of AI data centers in their local areas, including 48 percent who said they are “strongly opposed.” In comparison, 53 percent said they oppose having a nuclear power plant nearby.

The findings highlight growing public concern over the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure across the United States as major technology firms continue investing billions of dollars into new data center projects to support generative AI systems.

A Gallup survey is a scientifically validated public opinion and workplace engagement research instrument developed by the Gallup organization, which has long been recognized globally for conducting social, political, and economic polling.

Gallup noted that opposition to AI data centers has now exceeded the highest recorded opposition to nuclear plants since the polling organization first asked the nuclear question in 2001, where opposition peaked at 63 percent.

The survey found that environmental and quality-of-life concerns were among the biggest reasons behind public resistance.
Half of respondents who opposed nearby data centers cited concerns over heavy electricity and water consumption, while others raised issues involving pollution, rising utility costs, traffic, and the possible impact on local communities.

Despite the strong opposition, the survey also showed that Americans who support AI data centers largely see them as economic drivers.
Among respondents who favor having data centers in their local areas, 66 percent cited local economic benefits as the primary reason, while 55 percent specifically pointed to job opportunities, according to Gallup’s breakdown of survey responses.

The survey also showed that 13 percent of supporters believe data centers could bring tax revenue and financial investments, while others pointed to infrastructure development, new businesses, and broader economic growth in local communities.

On the technology side, 17 percent cited technology-related benefits, including supporting growing AI demand and improving internet services. Some respondents also said AI infrastructure is inevitable as artificial intelligence continues becoming more integrated into industries and daily life.

Meanwhile, 10 percent mentioned personal benefits, including easier access to AI-powered services and tools.

The survey also found that some Americans view AI data centers as strategically important for helping the United States remain competitive in the global technology race.

Gallup said opposition crossed political lines, with majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independent voters all expressing resistance to local AI data center construction.

The report further showed that Democrats registered the highest level of strong opposition toward AI data centers compared to other political groups.

The survey comes as the global AI race continues driving massive growth in data center construction, with tech firms investing heavily in infrastructure capable of powering next-generation AI systems. However, the expansion has also intensified debates surrounding energy consumption, water usage, environmental impact, and pressure on local power grids.
