DITO deploys emergency connectivity support for Mayon evacuees in Albay

  • In Camalig, Albay, 435 evacuees found more than just temporary shelter—they found a community that stays connected. Through the Tulung-Tulong DITO booth at Tagaytay Elementary School, families displaced by Mayon Volcano’s ash explosion were given access tofree calls, WiFi, streaming, and clean drinking water—small but meaningful ways to stay close to loved ones and to each other.

As communities near Mayon Volcano continue to deal with the effects of recent ash explosions, DITO Telecommunity has rolled out emergency connectivity and relief support for evacuees in Camalig through its Tulung-Tulong DITO and Oplan Libreng Tawag programs.

The telecommunications provider said it mobilized personnel and connectivity resources at the evacuation center in Barangay Tagaytay Elementary School, located around six kilometers from the identified danger zone of the volcano.

The ash explosion on May 2 prompted precautionary evacuations in the municipalities of Camalig and Guinobatan, displacing families from nearby communities, particularly residents of Barangay Anoling.

As of May 8, around 435 evacuees from more than a hundred families were sheltering at the evacuation site, according to DITO. The company added that at least 137 evacuees had already connected to its free WiFi services.

To support affected residents, DITO established on-site emergency connectivity services that include free WiFi access, dedicated calling services, and 24/7 assistance from deployed personnel. The company also distributed free drinking water to evacuees through its Tulung-Tulong DITO booth.

“In times of crisis, staying connected is not a luxury. It is a lifeline,” said Eric Alberto.

“We remain committed to ensuring that no evacuee is left without the means to reach their family or access critical information as we continue to monitor the situation in Bicol,” he added.

DITO said it is also coordinating with local government units and barangay officials to manage operations and expand support if the number of evacuees increases in the coming days.

The company noted that its network infrastructure in the affected area remains operational, allowing it to sustain emergency communications support and deploy additional mobile connectivity units if needed.

Adel Tamano said the company continues to work closely with local authorities and government agencies to ensure uninterrupted communication support for both evacuees and emergency responders.
