OpenAI has started rolling out an age prediction system in ChatGPT, marking a new step in how the platform applies safety controls based on who may be using an account.
The feature is designed to identify accounts that are likely used by people under 18, allowing ChatGPT to automatically adjust its behavior and apply additional protections without requiring users to self-report their age.
The system works by analyzing signals linked to an account’s activity to estimate whether it may belong to a minor. If ChatGPT determines that an account is likely used by someone under 18, it activates stricter safety settings aimed at reducing exposure to sensitive or potentially harmful material.
These safeguards do not block general use of the platform but influence how certain topics are handled, especially those involving violence, sexual or romantic role play, risky online trends, and content that could negatively affect body image or health.
OpenAI acknowledges that age prediction is not perfect and that some adults may be incorrectly placed into the under-18 experience.
To address this, the company allows users who are 18 or older to verify their age and remove the additional restrictions. Age verification can be initiated through ChatGPT’s settings and is handled by a third-party provider, Persona, which confirms a user’s age through a live selfie or a government-issued ID, depending on regional requirements.
According to OpenAI, privacy is a central consideration in the process. The company does not receive copies of users’ IDs or selfies and only receives confirmation of age. Verification data held by the third-party provider is deleted after a short retention period, while OpenAI stores only the age information needed to manage account settings.
Once verification is completed, the extra safety settings are lifted, although changes may take a short time to fully apply across the account. Users who complete verification are also excluded from future automated age prediction checks.
The rollout of age prediction is being implemented gradually and takes into account regional legal frameworks, including stricter child-protection and digital safety rules in areas such as the European Union.
OpenAI positions the update as part of a broader effort to make ChatGPT safer and more adaptive as its user base continues to expand globally.
The update reflects growing pressure on AI platforms to balance accessibility, safety, and privacy as they become embedded in everyday digital life.
