OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser built for smarter web use

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a next-generation web browser that integrates its flagship artificial intelligence (AI) assistant directly into the browsing experience—bringing ChatGPT beyond search and into everyday internet use.

“AI gives us a rare moment to rethink what it means to use the web,” OpenAI said.

“With Atlas, ChatGPT can come with you anywhere across the web—helping you in the window right where you are, understanding what you’re trying to do, and completing tasks for you, all without copying and pasting or leaving the page. Your ChatGPT memory is built in, so conversations can draw on past chats and details to help you get new things done,” OpenAI added.

Through Atlas, users can interact with ChatGPT anywhere on the web—asking questions, summarizing pages, comparing data, or completing tasks in real time without switching tabs. The browser features built-in memory, allowing ChatGPT to recall context from visited pages and past interactions to offer more personalized help.

OpenAI clarified that these browser memories are optional and user-controlled; users can view, archive, or delete them at any time, and data will not be used for model training unless they opt in.

A preview feature called agent mode enables ChatGPT to take actions directly within the browser, such as conducting research, shopping online, or handling forms using live page context. The feature is currently available to Plus, Pro, and selected Business users.

ChatGPT Atlas debuts today for macOS and will soon roll out to Windows, iOS, and Android. It is accessible to both free and paid ChatGPT accounts, with added capabilities unlocked for higher tiers.
