The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has ordered all e-wallet platforms to remove links to online gambling sites within the next 48 hours.

During a Senate hearing of the Committee on Games and Amusements, jointly with the Committees on Banks, Financial Institutions and Currencies; Youth; Economic Affairs; and Ways and Means, BSP Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan confirmed that the central bank has instructed e-wallet operators to immediately begin removing the said links.

“We gave them 48 hours to take down the link,” Tangonan said.

The directive came after Senator Alan Peter Cayetano raised concerns about the continued availability of e-wallet services for online gaming sites.

“May order nang tanggalin ang links, so hindi sumusunod sa inyo?” Cayetano asked.

Still, the senator appeared unsatisfied with the explanation.

“So, in 48 hours, makakaasa kami na natanggal na lahat? Why do they need 48 hours, isn’t that instant naman?” Cayetano pressed.

“Why give them 48 hours pa, kung sure naman kayo?” he added.

As of writing, the committee hearing is still ongoing.
