YouTube changes how public views are counted across video formats

YouTube is changing how views are counted across its video formats, with a video set to register a public view from the moment it begins playing.
The new counting standard will take effect globally beginning Aug. 24, 2026, as YouTube moves to align its different video formats under the same measurement system.
Under the change, a view will be counted once a video begins to play, starting from its very first frame.
YouTube said it previously used multiple view-counting systems across different formats, which could create confusion for creators trying to understand how much exposure their content receives.
The company said it decided to introduce a common standard after hearing from creators who wanted to eliminate confusion around the metric and better understand their overall exposure.
The change follows an earlier update to how YouTube counts public views for Shorts. The platform will now apply the same standard across all formats.
For creators, however, the new public view count will not completely replace the platform’s existing measurement.
YouTube said it will retain the original view metric under the name “Engaged views” in YouTube Analytics’ Advanced Mode.
The metric will allow creators to see how many viewers chose to continue watching their videos, providing a distinction between videos that simply started playing and those where viewers continued watching.
Monetization remains unchanged
YouTube stressed that the change in public view counting will not affect creators’ earnings or how they qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).
Creator earnings will continue to be based on “Engaged Shorts views” and “Engaged Watch Hours,” which creators can access through YouTube Analytics’ Advanced Mode.
YouTube also said there will be no change to YPP eligibility requirements.
However, some terminology will change. YPP entry requirements will now refer to “qualified Shorts views” and “qualified watch hours,” replacing the terms “valid public Shorts views” and “valid public watch hours.”
Creators may see faster view growth
Once the new system takes effect on Aug. 24, the updated view metric will be used wherever views are displayed on YouTube.
The platform said this means creators will likely see their total view counts increase faster moving forward.
For creators, the change separates two measurements: the public view count showing when videos begin playing and the “Engaged views” metric showing how many viewers choose to continue watching.
YouTube said having the same metric across its video formats is intended to give creators a clearer picture of their overall exposure and make it easier for them to communicate their scale and value to potential brand partners and sponsors.
