LG removes ads from monitor app after users raise privacy concerns

LG Electronics has agreed to remove promotional advertisements from its Windows monitor companion app after users criticized the software for displaying pop up ads without their explicit consent.

The controversy began after it was reported that connecting certain LG monitors to a Windows 11 PC automatically triggered the installation of the LG Monitor App Installer through Microsoft’s Hardware Support App (HSA) framework.

Although designed to provide monitor settings and firmware support, the application also displayed advertisements promoting McAfee antivirus software and some LG services. During testing, the McAfee promotion reportedly appeared on nearly every system startup.

LG clarified that McAfee antivirus is not automatically installed on users’ computers. The company said only the LG Monitor App Installer is delivered through Microsoft’s official device support system, while installing McAfee still requires the user’s approval.

However, the explanation did little to calm concerns from users, many of whom argued that simply plugging in a monitor should not result in software being installed automatically, much less software that displays advertisements.

The issue quickly gained attention within the technology community, prompting Microsoft to discuss the matter with LG. The company has since agreed to disable the McAfee promotional pop ups in the application.

Beyond the advertisements themselves, the incident has sparked a broader debate about transparency and user consent. Security experts have long warned that companion software bundled with hardware can increase the attack surface of a computer, consume system resources, and introduce features that users neither need nor expect.

The controversy also places renewed attention on Microsoft’s Hardware Support App framework, which allows compatible devices to automatically download manufacturer applications intended to improve the user experience. Critics argue that while the system is useful for delivering drivers and device management tools, it should not become a channel for marketing third party products.

For consumers, the incident serves as a reminder to review newly installed applications after connecting new hardware and to remove software that is unnecessary. It also highlights a growing expectation that hardware manufacturers prioritize transparency and user choice over promotional opportunities.

As more devices become connected and increasingly software driven, experts say trust will depend not only on security but also on respecting users’ control over what gets installed on their computers.
