Facebook desktop outage hits global users according to international media reports

Facebook’s desktop platform suffered a widespread outage on Sunday, disrupting access for users worldwide, according to reports from news organizations in the United States, the Philippines, South Africa, Bangladesh, Ireland and Turkey.

South Africa’s MyBroadband described the incident as a global outage, reporting simultaneous spikes in outage reports on both the international and South African versions of Downdetector. It said users attempting to access Facebook through a web browser encountered an “Account Temporarily Unavailable” error, while Facebook and Instagram feeds failed to refresh for many users.

Bangladesh’s Daily Sun likewise reported that Facebook’s desktop version experienced a widespread disruption affecting users across several countries.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s Irish Mirror and Türkiye Today of Turkey also described the incident as a worldwide outage affecting Facebook’s desktop platform.

Several Philippine media outlets also reported widespread service disruptions affecting Facebook users in the country, citing Downdetector reports and Meta’s acknowledgment that it was working to restore affected services.

Based on reports from media organizations confirmed reports are from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, India, Singapore, Bangladesh, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates.

Several reports described the disruption as global, indicating that additional countries may also have experienced service issues.

As of publication, Meta has not released a detailed explanation for the outage. None of the reports reviewed indicated that the disruption was caused by a cybersecurity incident or data breach.
