PH consulate in HK warns Filipinos against fake aid scam messages

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong has issued a warning to Filipinos about scam messages circulating on WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook that falsely claim to offer government assistance.
In an advisory (HKPCG-ADV-61-09-25), the consulate cautioned the public against schemes promising benefits supposedly from the Hong Kong government, including “groceries worth HKD 5,000, free eye check-ups, and free eyeglasses.”
“These scammers may entice victims with attractive offers and so-called free gifts or rewards to trick them into giving away personal information,” the consulate said. It explained that the stolen information is often misused to open stooge accounts for money laundering and other crimes.
The consulate urged Filipinos in Hong Kong to remain vigilant and “always be cautious and discerning of random online messages.”
For those who wish to report scam attempts, the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force can be contacted through its 24/7 Anti-Scam Helpline 18222.
“If you are unsure whether the messages you receive are legitimate or not, or if you have fallen victim to these scams, you may also email the Assistance-to-Nationals Section of the consulate at atn.hkpcg@gmail.com for immediate help,” it added.5
