I got scammed and I didn’t see it coming

I have a public confession to make. I always thought I was careful. For all my online purchases, I insist on cash-on-delivery. It’s my small defense against scams, especially when ordering from overseas.
So, when I received a text message one afternoon while I was in a meeting from someone claiming to be from J&T Express, stating that my package had arrived, I didn’t question it. I’d been waiting for a book, something I’d ordered weeks ago for 978 pesos. I instructed the courier to leave the package with the guard and get the payment from the guard on duty.
He said okay. So far, so normal.
However, when I came down later that day, I found something other than a book. It was a flimsy, plastic phone holder, the kind you see on Shopee or Lazada for less than P50. I just stood there staring at it.
Now here’s the worst part: I’m the co-founder of Scam Watch Pilipinas. This is the kind of thing I warn people about. So to fall for it myself? Unforgivable. But I’m just a human being. I’m not perfect. I commit mistakes—this time, a painful one. Hopefully, it serves as a wake-up call for me and maybe a warning to my friends, too.
Lessons (the hard way)
If it can happen to someone as cautious as I am, someone who should know better, it can happen to anyone. Here are a few takeaways that might spare someone else the frustration:
1. Always check the packaging or sender before authorizing payment. Even in a rush, ask the guard (or whoever’s receiving it) to confirm the label.
2. Scammers are getting better at timing and tone. They know how to sound like real couriers and when to catch you distracted.
3. Just because it’s COD doesn’t make it scam-proof. You’re still handing over money without checking what’s inside.
4. Keep records. Screenshot your order details and keep tracking numbers on hand so you can quickly verify anything suspicious.
Sometimes we let our guard down in the most mundane moments. That’s exactly when they get us. Stay sharp.
