The Philippines’ first wrist-based ABPM smartwatch could help save lives

  • The HUAWEI WATCH D3 recorded my blood pressure at 119/76 mmHg with a pulse rate of 97 beats per minute, while the OMRON automatic digital upper-arm blood pressure monitor showed 119/74 mmHg with a pulse rate of 94 beats per minute. The systolic readings were identical, with differences of only 2 mmHg in the diastolic readings and three beats per minute in the pulse rates. My earlier comparison with a manual sphygmomanometer was even closer, with both devices producing the same blood pressure reading. Small variations are normal because blood pressure and pulse rate can change within minutes due to movement, posture, breathing, stress and cuff position. These personal comparisons are not formal clinical tests, but the consistently close results are impressive.

The HUAWEI WATCH D3 goes beyond ordinary smartwatch features by focusing on blood pressure, a crucial indicator of cardiovascular health. It is the Philippines’ first wrist-based ABPM device, a capability not found in other smartwatches currently available in the Philippine market. It offers accurate, comprehensive and AI-powered monitoring for advanced cardiovascular health management.

ABPM stands for Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring. It measures blood pressure repeatedly over a set period, usually 24 hours, while a person continues normal daily activities and sleeps. This provides daytime, nighttime and overall averages instead of relying on a single reading. It can help identify changes that may be missed during a clinic visit, including unusually high nighttime pressure, white-coat hypertension and masked hypertension.

Unlike watches that estimate blood pressure through optical sensors, the HUAWEI WATCH D3 has an inflatable airbag built into its strap. It uses the oscillometric method found in electronic blood pressure monitors to measure systolic and diastolic pressure and pulse rate from the wrist.

I compared it with a manual sphygmomanometer

My first question was whether a wrist-worn device could deliver an accurate reading.

I measured my blood pressure using the HUAWEI WATCH D3. Immediately afterward, I went to the Manila Bulletin clinic and asked the nurse to check it using a manual sphygmomanometer with a cuff and stethoscope.

The readings were the same.

I was impressed by the accuracy. This was not a formal clinical test, and one matching result cannot replace medical validation. Still, seeing the watch match a reading taken by a healthcare professional gave me confidence in it as a practical monitoring tool.

Correct use is essential. The strap must fit properly, the wrist should be held at heart level, and the wearer must remain still and avoid talking. Huawei provides medium and large airbags for wrists measuring 13 to 21 centimeters.

Monitoring throughout the day and night

Blood pressure changes with activity, stress, sleep, temperature and other factors.

The HUAWEI WATCH D3’s ABPM, can automatically take readings at scheduled intervals over 24 hours, including during sleep. It records daytime, nighttime and overall averages and produces a report that can be exported through Huawei Health and shared with a doctor.

Huawei also offers a less disruptive seven-reading schedule, with four measurements during the day and three at night. This may be more comfortable for regular monitoring, although anyone needing formal diagnostic ABPM should follow a doctor’s prescribed schedule.

Nighttime monitoring is valuable because elevated blood pressure or the absence of a normal nighttime drop may not appear during a clinic visit.

Health monitoring in a familiar smartwatch

The watch can check blood pressure before and after running, walking or cycling. If a pre-exercise reading is high, it can warn against excessive intensity and prompt another measurement after exercise.

Health Glance brings together blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, ECG, heart-rate variability, stress and emotional wellbeing, depending on regional availability. The watch also supports arrhythmia analysis and can flag possible signs of atrial fibrillation. These are screening tools, not diagnoses.

TruSleep 5.0 analyzes sleep, while Physical Readiness uses health and activity information to help users decide whether to exercise or rest. If the AI workout features are unavailable, update the watch to software version 17.1.8.300.

Huawei Health Community lets users, with permission, share health information and alerts with relatives. This can help people caring for an elderly parent or someone with hypertension.

The HUAWEI WATCH D3 also offers a 1.92-inch AMOLED display, more than 100 workout modes, GPS, Bluetooth calling, notifications and route navigation. It works with Android phones and iPhones. Battery life reaches six days with typical use or about one day with ABPM active. Wireless charging takes around 75 minutes.

Although it carries an IP68 rating, Huawei does not recommend using it for swimming, diving or showering.

Users should never change medication or make treatment decisions based solely on the watch. Anyone with arrhythmias, diabetes, kidney disease, arteriosclerosis or circulation problems should consult a physician.

Early-bird offers

At the HUAWEI Store, customers can pay a PHP 500 deposit from September 25 to October 1 and receive PHP 6,000 off. From October 2 to 31, the store will offer a PHP 5,500 early-bird voucher.

Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop will offer a PHP 4,000 discount from October 2 to 31, with no deposit required.

A smartwatch that could help save lives

My comparison at the Manila Bulletin clinic left the strongest impression on me. The HUAWEI WATCH D3 produced exactly the same reading as the clinic’s manual sphygmomanometer. I also compared it with a digital sphygmomanometer, and the results were nearly identical. These comparisons gave me confidence in the device’s ability to measure blood pressure accurately.

For me, its most meaningful innovation is making those measurements easier to take throughout an ordinary day, including while I sleep. The readings give me something concrete to bring to a doctor if a pattern concerns me.

If you or someone you love needs regular blood pressure monitoring, the HUAWEI WATCH D3 could be a valuable health companion. It does not replace a doctor, but it could help bring a hidden problem to someone’s attention in time to seek care. Used properly, that is how innovation can help save lives.
