BREAKING: Globe keeps services running on backup power after magnitude 7.8 Mindanao earthquake

Globe Telecom said it has activated backup power systems to keep mobile and data services running in areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao, helping residents stay connected with their loved ones and supporting emergency response and rescue coordination efforts.

The powerful earthquake caused widespread concern across several parts of Mindanao and prompted precautionary measures by local power distributors, including the temporary shutdown of electricity in some areas to ensure public safety and allow for facility inspections.

Despite the commercial power interruptions, Globe said its network remains operational in affected locations through backup power systems deployed across its cell sites.

Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Communications Officer of Globe Group, said some network facilities are currently operating without commercial power because local electric cooperatives temporarily switched off electricity as a preventive safety measure following the earthquake.

“Some of our cell sites are currently operating without commercial power because local electric cooperatives temporarily switched off electricity as a preventive safety measure following the earthquake. Despite this, our customers continue to have access to mobile and data services because our network is running on backup power systems,” Crisanto said.

Crisanto added that Globe has not received any reports of cell sites being damaged or destroyed by the earthquake as of this time.

“We have no reported sites that have been hit or destroyed by the earthquake as of this time. Our teams continue to monitor the situation closely and are ready to respond should conditions change,” she said.

Globe said its network and operations teams are continuously monitoring affected sites and coordinating with local power providers to ensure uninterrupted service while commercial power restoration efforts are underway.

The company said maintaining network availability is crucial during emergencies, allowing affected residents to contact family members and loved ones while supporting the coordination of rescue, relief, and response operations in earthquake-affected communities.

Globe added that it remains committed to providing reliable connectivity as recovery and response efforts continue across the affected areas.
